The Burgdorfs' Web Site: Guest Book

We've had our family Web site up since late 1995, when the World-Wide Web was still young and innocent. Our original guest book was set up in January of 1996, and collected "signatures" until the end of 2002, when ongoing attacks by spammers forced us to disable the ability to post new messages. We reopened the guest book a year later, at the same time that we first posted about "The Gay Thing" and about how our life had changed, but finally closed it again early in 2008. The Web site's address had changed by then, since I'd sold the domain I'd been using for the previous decade, and traffic here (other than spambots) had dropped to almost nothing, anyway.

Though a lot of "chaff" has been removed in the interest of keeping the file size down, what appears below is a significant sampling of what was posted over the years. E-mail and Web site links have been removed, as most are likely out of date by now, anyway.

The references to Perl scripts, by the way, are to the shareware scripts I wrote and distributed from 1997 to 2007.

Hello, again. I'm still searching for connections to the Burgdorf families of Dubois County, Huntingburg, IN, from about 1850 to 1950. My great grandfather was Friederich Burgdorf (1822-1905), married to Christine Crone (1829-1891). They bore 2 boys(incl. my grandfather John Carl)and 3 girls, I think. John Carl(1856-1926) and Magdalena Propheter (1864-?) bore one son, my father Carl Frederick (1901-1948). Does anyone out there recognize a relationship? Thanks!

Darryl,

I was very pleased to talk to you on CoH and was very glad to read your website. My wife and I are in a similar situation only without children. We had been married for about 6 years when I circumstances forced my realization, and we have been married 7.5 years since then. Our relationship has changed as well, but we are still best friends and love each other very much.

I will talk to you in game sometime, and I would just like to pass along my thanks for putting up this page. It made us feel a little less alone in the world.

"I am astonished that you would enter into such perversion and destroy such a nice looking family."

I didn't "enter into" anything. I merely stopped lying to myself and others, and finally acknowledged after nearly 40 years who I really am.

"You can say that it did not destroy your family, but you have indeed destroyed what God intended."

Well, I certainly wouldn't presume or pretend to know what God "intended" for me or for anyone else. But I can say with certainty that the relationship I have with my wife, Joy, though no longer sexually intimate, is closer, more loving and more honest than it was before, and that as a side effect, our family is much stronger. Lies destroy relationships; honesty can either destroy or strengthen them. We chose the path of honesty, and for us, the results have been quite positive.

Mr. Burgdorf, please do not post my last guestbook entry, or, if in the event that you do post it, please delete it immediately. I do think that your scripts are very nice, but I did not realize, before I posted to your guestbook, that you are a Sodomite. I do not wish to have any entries in your guestbook.

I am astonished that you would enter into such perversion and destroy such a nice looking family. You can say that it did not destroy your family, but you have indeed destroyed what God intended.

I will pray that the Lord will be merciful to you, turning you away from your wickedness, to Him. Your lifestyle is what you chose, but it comes with consequences, because it is an abomination in the eyes of Almighty God. If you do not repent of your sins and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, how that He died on the cross, shedding His precious blood for the forgiveness of your sins, was buried and bodily rose from the grave three days and three nights later, then you are condemned to spend eternity in Hell and the Lake of Fire.

The Bible says, in Mark 1:15, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel."

I was searching through ideas for our new family home page, and we came across yours. I have to say that your words of wisdom are brave and honorable. It is certainly not the popular view, but our family supports you. Why shouldn't people who chose to be married be allowed to. Thank you for taking a stand. Warmest wishes from the McLellan Clan.

Namaste Mr Burgdorf,

I just wanted to take a moment and drop you a line in thanks for your obvious hardwork in putting together your online GLBT History Overview. I've spent the last few days reading it in my sparetime and I must say I think its the first time I've ever seen such a meaty chronology of our past. Its been both a source of pride and sorrow for me as I've read through it. Thank you so much for your efforts.

Sincerely,

Hi Darryl and Family!

Longtime fan of your PERL work...

I admire your strength and courage for rasing your children in a family with mixed sexual orientation. Darryl, I also thank you for being true to yourself and family by living who you REALLY are. America needs more champions for the cause of freedom; we need more families like yours - you make our country what it is.

Although, I do hope that you are not actively participating in sexual relationships (no matter what gender) outside of your marriage. The bonds of matrimony are sacred and should never be broken - even if it is an "open" marriage. I understand that this matter is a private one, and my hope is that you two remain faitful to one another.

All my Best, Joe

I just discovered this site. I was born in St. Louis, MO. My father was Richard August Burgdorf and he married Marie Sandner. Richard had a sister named Marcella Burgdorf who later married Frank Sellinger. I've lost touch with all my father's relatives over time. I do remember and John and Emily Burgdorf, who I think had a son named Bill Burgdorf who owned a bookstore many years ago. I also had distant cousins named Clair and Ed Burgdorf. If anyone knows anything about me, please let me know at dadrewry@sbcglobal.net

Darryl:

I was out looking for support on crossdressing and found this site. I thank you for the example of your social conscience (or perhaps mostly your dedication to those wonderful children). I am divorced and miss my 7 year old daughter very much!! Although I see her often, it hurts very badly not to be there every day. She misses me too!!

Anyway, I still use webadverts, and a few years back, I emailed you a question. The timing was probably the same as your big discovery. Now I understand why you didn't answer.

You guys have all my love, prayers, and support. RFE

Very happy to read your story. This has great parallels to my life in the last year and a half. Been together a few decades, with a multi child family also. Similar stories. We have also decided to preserve our family. We both know our relationship as a married couple will change. I have got a new sense of peace just recently, from the decision to accept that I should not worry about the future. I have to live in today, to constantly worry over the future, is to live in a constant state of anxiety. You would not believe how much that decision has given me peace. Kudos to you who have been so brave to put your story out there, I know that this will be valuable to society in some way. Kat.

I read your story with interest. Unfortunately, the situation you found yourselves in happens all too often.

I set up some years ago a site to help husbands who are gay or bisexual, but with time this extended to wives also. Currently I am running questionnaires so as to gather information anonymously on how both men and women cope. The response has been good and is growing. Hopefully, more and more people will have some understanding of marriages where the husband is gay or bisexual and also as to how to address them.

What a strange website to visit. We are Burgdorfs living in South Africa. We have 3 grown up children. Our eldest Karl-Heinz and his Latvian wife Zane lives in London. Richard and his wife Lisa lives in Tialand. Margrit is at present reading her honours degree at the Nelson Mandela university in Port Elizabeth. Jurgen is retired from VW here in Uitenhage and I am working in Cytology at National Health Lab Services in PE., by the way Jurgen is from Helmstedt in Germany and I am a local South African girl from german, dutch and french stock.

You all seems to be a well ajusted family. Hope to hear from you soon.

Hello Darryl and Joy,

I found your site while I was searching for script archives in Perl.

I was looking through your site wondering why there was so much personal content, when I was astounded to read about your Mixed Orientation Marraige. What a great new term! I grew up brielfy in Omaha, and I aplaud both of you for having the courage to face this sort of situation. I'm gay and I am involved with a may be soon fighting for custody to be returned to him of his 11yo son. I am encouraged to see that there are parenting groups for gays at all.

I came out at 15 and I was not able to hide it at school at all. I wanted Darryl to know that it wasn't any easier to be out in 1991 in high school. I suspect it's quite a bit easier now a days, but I think you are a very very lucky man to have gotten the best of both worlds, so to speak. I am also very happy to hear that you didnt get involved in Drugs. Many of the older (forgive me) men that I refer to as Late Gayed Adults turn to drinking andf drugs with a vengeance and often use up all their money and resources to do this. I myself am in recovery and I feel blessed that I am able to get on with living at 28 and have so much time to look forward to.

Hopefully I've got a 11yo on the way.

YEESH!!

Anyway, I don't email folks often, and I hope I've shared something you benefit from hearing. Your honesty and willingness with your story was a blessing to me, and I thank you.

Good Afternoon, My Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Burgdorf married a Taylor (not sure if it was George or ??). He never returned from the Civil war and Elizabeth went to Hillsdale Michigan with 2 small children, John Daniel Taylor and a daughter, She then married another man from the same area in N.Y (in Hillsdale). I will find his name. Elizabeth was from a large family in Westbury.. Do you know anything about her or where I could look for information? I am 72 years of age and I would like to know more. I have some information somewhere, but can't find it. Thanks... Jack Taylor

What a lovely site, you have. Thanks for sharing with all. After a recent death in my Family, I was talking to an old friend, about the Past. (I'm almost 60, and I think that's what I do best. :))..Anyway, I mentioned a name of one of my Late Brother's friends. She was Sydney Burgdorf. She was a precious girl, and loved me. Of course, I was the little sister of her Boyfriend. :) Anyway, the old friend knew her, amazingly, but, only from sight, at her High School. Small World indeed. So, in case anyone knows if Sydney is still with us, please say hello for me. Thanks, Sincerely, Laura Mancuso (formerly of New Orleans, now living in Baton Rouge, La.)

You are of course welcome to your opinion, Mr. Boden, and we don't expect everyone to approve of the accommodations we've made in our life. But neither Joy nor I believe I would have been "kinder" to her or to the kids if I had chosen to leave them. That, in fact, would have been the easy and selfish route. The choices Joy and I have made aren't necessarily the right ones for everyone in a situation like ours, but we've made them -- together -- specifically because we do still love each other and because we want to put the needs of our family as a whole over our needs as individuals.

Darryl Burgdorf

Dear Joy & Darryl,

I read your story with both interest and surprise. The fact is that you Darryl broke your marriage vow to Joy by cheating on her with a man. After reading your story youcome accross as a very selfish man far more concerned about your feelings and your sexuality than anything else. Can you possibly imagine the pain Joy must have felt when you decided to come out? The kindest thing you could have done for Joy and your children would have been to get divorced and then concentrate on building a new kind of relationship with you family. I very much hope that in your current situation you are not having relations with men. That really would be utterly unforgivable. If you are gay, then that's fine but don't use your family as a crutch.

Darryl, second entry - last in April 04. Hope all is well over there.

Have included something for the spammers to chew on. I'm now getting quite a few spam hits from my entry a bit further down...

See http://www.monkeys.com/wpoison/ for more details on giving spammers a bit of a hard time...

Wpoison is a free tool that can be used to help reduce the problem of bulk junk e-mail on the Internet in general, and at sites using Wpoison in particular.

Wpoison helps to combat the junk e-mail problem by effectively thwarting the efforts of junk e-mailers who regularly scan web pages, looking for target e-mail addresses to harvest. (The junk e-mailers subsequently send junk e-mail to all of the e-mail addresses that they harvest from various web sites.)

(Darryl- I've been using WebBBS for--I don't know--maybe 7 years. Its been great. I found it very easy to extend and adapt. I re-visited your web page because we're considering downloading the current version because it can be moderated.)

Darryl and Joy -

So, I explored your site and discovered your amazing and touching story about your gay-straight marriage. I am so impressed with both of you for having the courage to face your unusual situation with so much courage and honesty, and to share it so openly. Its rare that tears come to my eyes when I read a web site that I first encountered for business-related reasons.

My sister's ex-husband is a transsexual. They divorced (their child was a teenager) but they still love each other and do things together. I was impressed years ago when that happened that my sister had the courage to maintain her love for her ex-husband. I'm similarly impressed that you're willing to declare your love for each other in the face of a situation that much of society finds so frightening.

Reading your stories has made me realize that I have a Boulder, Colorado liberal snob streak. Many in Boulder--me included I realize strongly now--see ourselves as liberated and enlightened, unlike for instance, the "up tight, narrow-minded" Midwest. And now I see that you two, in Omaha no less, have been able to find enough support in your environment (as well as strength within yourselves) to pursue your alternative lifestyle in the open. I am going to have to seriously rethink my views of the Midwest.

Blessings (of whatever sort you're comfortable with) to both of you. It is always inspiring to see courage--and you show great courage.

Best wishes,

Bill M.

But I was working in the years 1979 - 1980 and 1984 - 1985 in the city of Frankfurt, at the central of 'Dresdner Bank AG'. Hey Darryl, I got a huge charge out of catching up with your life via the web. I guess in my old age, I've been in the mood for reconnecting with my Nashville childhood. A few of our classmates told me what you were up to when I spoke to them at the 20-year reunion--I'm truly glad all is going well--what a BEAUTIFUL family! I would leave my family's web page address, if I could remember it! My wife takes care of that important stuff.

Hi to all the Burgdorfs! What a surprise! My great grandfather was Hermann J. Burgdorf who emigrated from Germany to Boston where he married Barbara Stahler, from Lambsheim Germany, in 1887. Have been unable to trace him to Germany so far. His parents were Wilhelm & Frederika. Hermann & Barbara had 7-8 children, the oldest being William my grandfather. William married Catherine Collins in Boston & had Herman, my father, in 1911. If anyone knows of this Burgdorf family, I'd love to hear from you. (My father's name was spelled incorrectly on his birth certificate making me mountain village rather than castle village.)

I am searching for relatives of my grandfather who was Sidney Burgdorf. He married Mary Jane (Rossi). He did not discuss his family much but I do know that he had a sister named Betty who I have never met. I think she might live in California, Washington or Oregon. He resided in Chiloquin, Oregon and has passed on in this last year or so. His wife Mary Jane Burgdorf had 3 children (Joe, Robert, Joy Ann) from a previous marriage, I believe. Together they had 6 children-Sidney Jr., Mary, Janice, Betty, Ethel, and Mercedes. I do not know his parents names or where they were originally from. I am researching my family tree and have come up against a road block. Thanks! Tonya

Wow! I have hit the motherlode! I, too, am always watching for genealogical connections, especially on the side of my father Carl F. Burgdorf who died at age 47(1948) when I was only 5. He (we)lived in Huntingburg, Indiana. His parents were Frederich and Magdalena (Propheter). This line of Burgdorfs seem to have immigrated here from Germany around 1850 through New Orleans. I was told my grandparents had another adopted(?)son, but we don't know what became of him. If anyone out there has information, I'd love to see it.

What a delightful family and web page. I found your website through my quilting on the web and saw some of your lovely works of art. I don't know how you find time to do such beautiful pieces! You have many things in common with my family. Our son just returned from a year in Germany serving the ELCA(Lutheran Church) as assistant pastor in Frankfurt, Germany. He also served congregations on several posts and bases in Germany while the military chaplains were gone. My husband is an Air Force veteran with 23+ years of service and his family is from the Nebraska/Iowa area. Matter of fact, our neice lives in Bellevue with her family of 2 small daughters. Continue on with your beautiful handiwork and your lovely family. Best wishes for a lovely holiday season! Vonne in Minnesota

It is fascinating to see how many Burgdorfs there are, all over the world! I have been to Burgdorf, Germany and Burgdorf, Switzerland. I understand there is also a Burgdorf (small town) in the state of Idaho, USA! With all these Burgdorfs, how could one trace back a lineage? James, I don't intend (and will not allow) this to become a debate page, but I can't let your comment go uncorrected. The meaning of the terms "liberal" and "conservative" has changed many times over the years. Our country was founded on principles which were, at the time, quite liberal. But modern-day liberalism, with its desire to control how people think and live, with its absurd belief that the solution to every problem is even more government interference, and with its refusal to acknowledge that anyone is ever actually responsible for his or her own actions, is in many respects the very antithesis of the principles of freedom and individual responsibility upon which the United States was founded. Those principles are today most tightly held by the Libertarians, and to a lesser extent, but still significantly, by conservative Republicans. But liberal Democrats? Don't make me laugh.

Darryl Burgdorf

Burgdorfs rule! But about that quote on your page: Liberalism has been with us since the country's beginning. The US was founded on Liberal principles. Conservatism was a bad word until Goldwater came along in the '60's.

His home was in the town of Oppenheim, of Fulton, county N. Y. He is burried on his farm. Another Johann Burgdorff lived near-by at German Flatts, Near Herkimer.

In the later years from Heinrick, the name has been changed to Burkdorf of which goes back to 1778. Their is a Johann Peter listed who had taken off Dec. 21 1778 in Lancaster, Pa. all as POW's

Hi there! Best regards to you and your lovely family Darryl! I have a wonderful time reading about you and your family. By chance, I came across your Perl cgi script on the web (I am a novice Web Software Developer, still working in my office at this hour - Thursday Oct 14,1999. 8.00pm UK time) and I was curious about you that I decided to accept your invitation to visit your family website. It's fantastic! Glad I did it and I sure will visit your site again.

Sorry I do not know which URL to give as my home page. As I do not have one at the moment - may be soon. But you are welcome to drop a line or two (email); or if you have any queries about some of the UK stuff (culture, people, food, commerce, weather, etc) - I don't mind at all. If I can help or answer your query, I will.

Thanks for your excellent web site again and take care.

Hey, you have a really well built site.. and your family is, well, a family! That's a good thing. Around here you can't find many complete families! Anyway, I was surfing through for CGI scripts to run on my site.. and Came accross your site. One problem with your scripts, I can't run them! Actually, I got 1 simple script to work on my server, but I have thousands of scripts on my hard drive.. and still can't get 1 to install properly on my server! What's up with that? If you would like to help me with this problem I really could use your help.. or can you refer me to something? I will soon be putting a link on my site to yours! Thank's a million.. p.s. You home looks nice.

I am from a small town in South Carolina. I am a Senior at South Carolina State University in Early childhood Education. I was fortunate enough to visit Burgdorf, Germany a few years ago but unfortunately, we were unable to find out a lot about my great however many grandfather, August W. Gustav Burgdorf who left the area in the mid-1800's and came to Georgia, USA. If anyone may know any information about this particular part of the family I would love to know! I think this site is a great idea!

Well, I must say I am very surprised at the amount of people who have visited this page. I found you while looking at something completely different but with your link at the bottom. I klicked on (being nosey) and found your site. I am very interested in how you go about something like this, but I just don't seem to be able to get to grips with it. Oh well, one day maybe. I found your family homepage very interesting, and the pics are great. Well done. By the way, I am a Brit living in Germany.

I was just surfing the Web for info on the Burgdorf(f) name and - WHAM! - look what I found! Nice to know there are so many other Burgdorf(f)s out there. My great-grandmother was named Carolina BURGDORFF. She immigrated in 1868 from Steinbruck, a very small village in what is now Niedersachsen, Germany, to Carlinville, Macoupin County, Illinois. Some of her siblings immigrated, too, but not all of them stayed in Carlinville (at least one moved on to California, for example). Anyway, nice to see the home page! I'm interested in trying to establish connections with related Burgdorf(f)s, and I do have more information to share.

Bye, Scott

Hi! I'm Ginger Burgdorf Sullivan - just came back from a 'searching for family' trip w/my brother Louis James Burgdorf the second. Our great great grandfather settled in Murfreesboro TN was born in 1838(?) and married Amelia Picard in 1860. They had seven children - Louis J., Charles, Frank, James, Josie, Ellen and Beulia. My father was the only son of James who migrated to N.Y. Josie died young, Beulia married went to Ga. ended up as a very wealthy widow and returned to Tn. Frank stayed in Tn as did Louis (bought the Town newspaper) and Ellen. Charles married, divorced and had his mother bring up the children. His granddaughter lives in Natchez, Miss. (we think).

If you want to drop us a line feel free.

P.S. Hear there is a Virginia Sullivan in Tx and Know there's an Augustus in North Carolina.

Hello, I am a junior at Mount Holyoke College in MA and I was doing some research when I decided to type in my own last name. I then decided to try the web and I got some surprising results. I don't know much about the Burgdorf part of me. My grandfather's name is Sidney Burgdorf, Jr, I have nevermet any of his side. He currently resides in CHiloquin, OR. My family lives in MN, right now, so I am a bit disconnected. Anyway, thanks for listening to my story. I don't really how many Burgdorf's there are inthe US, but I think I remember someone telling me that there weren't too many. So could we ally be related? It's kind of fun to think about. ANyway, if you'd like to write to me please do. I love to get mail! -Sara
