The Marauders

Peter Pettigrew | James Potter | Remus Lupin | Sirius Black

Return to History Page

Most well known for their part in the downfall of Lord Voldemort, the 'Marauders' were a group of approximately twenty five young wizards, led by the formidable foursome of Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, James Potter and Peter Pettigrew. What little information we have concerning these four life-long friends is contained in this volume for future generations. Much that we know came from first-hand sources, people who knew the four - and it is no guarantee how much of this is true and how much is unsubstantiated rumour. The quest for the truth continues.

To us, the four men named here will be eternal heroes, whatever they eventually choose to become.

Peter Pettigrew

Our sources say that amongst the leaders of the group known as the Marauders, Pettigrew was more commonly known by the codename 'Wormtail'. Little is known of Pettigrew's history; however, his Hogwarts records leave us with the impression that he was not a great student, but that his quick mind and fast thinking abilities were held in high regard by the rest of the group. In the years before the battle, Pettigrew worked in a low-ranking job at the Ministry of Magic. He seems to have been almost entirely forgettable.

Pettigrew was stationed at Hogwarts on the day of the final attack against Voldemort, something which he seems to have very much resented. Shortly after the downfall of the Dark Lord, Pettigrew disappeared and his whereabouts remains unknown to this day.

James Potter

Declared by Albus Dumbledore to be one of the true heroes of the Great Battle, 'Prongs' was killed defending his best friend and leader, Sirius Black. Those who remember Potter recall a friendly, honest and honourable young man who was known for his devotion to his friends, for his talents on the Quidditch field, and latterly, for his unswerving loyalty.

After graduating Hogwarts, Potter had a brief stint as the school's Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, which he left, firstly in order to get married, and latterly to join the Marauders working against Voldemort.

Posthumously awarded 'Order of Merlin, First Class', Potter will be remembered by wizarding generations to come as the wizard who gave his life in order that others would survive. His widow, Lilly, has long since become despondent with the wizarding world. She married a Muggle named Vernon Dursley, and they live happily in the South of England with their two children, Dudley and James.

Remus Lupin

Whispered to be the 'loose cannon' in the pack, it has since been confirmed that Remus Lupin, known to his friends as 'Moony', was, in fact, a werewolf. His transformations were barely controlled by the recently-discovered Wolfsbane Potion, and in the years leading up to the Great Battle, nobody was entirely sure of his whereabouts. It was rumoured that many were surprised he turned up to aid the cause against Voldemort at all.

However, Lupin proved himself on the field of battle as a most adept and able young man, and, indeed, it is widely acknowledged that the majority of the defence against the onslaught of Dark Magic was performed by him. Like Pettigrew, Lupin vanished soon after the Battle. Rumours abound that he was driven mad by the Dementors and now exists as a wild werewolf somewhere in England.

Sirius Black

The leader of the Marauders, and a legend in his own lifetime. 'Padfoot' was the key to the success of the Great Battle. His earlier attempts at strategy had proven him to be quite astonishingly intelligent, a trait which alienated him early in his days at Hogwarts, apart from his three friends, Pettigrew, Lupin and Potter.

Before taking command of the rebellion faction, Black travelled the world extensively, drawing knowledge from some of the greatest wizards of our time. He applied that knowledge to his plans and openly shared what information he could to give the Marauders whatever advantage they could take.

Black was captured during the first attack on Voldemort's hideaway, and placed in Azkaban for six months. He escaped his prison - by means as yet undisclosed by Black (Editors Note: Is it possible that this has something to do with the unconfirmed rumours about Black being an unregistered Animagus?) - and returned to regroup the Marauders into the fighting machine that earned them their justified reputation in the history books.

Stunned by the death of Potter, Black took no part in the celebrations following Voldemort's downfall, and instead disappeared, along with Pettigrew and Lupin. He has contacted Dumbledore from time to time, and it would seem that he has returned to travelling the world.
